How We Calculate Clutter

We’ve done our best to make determining your level of clutter as objective as possible. Each room is given a number of points allowed by type (ex. kitchen 15 - 25 points, bedroom 10 - 15 points, etc). Each point equals an item or group of like items clustered together in one area (ex. a bed, dresser, a group of small figurines, etc).

Once the number of items you have exceeds the threshold for the room type, you start to accumulate “clutter points”. These points are totaled against your home's threshold and the percentage of clutter is assessed.

For example, your Home's Total Points = 100 and you have 115 or +15 points. The extra 15 points determines the percentage we charge for clutter.

The level of clutter in your home can effect your total price. Clutter is based of the number of extra items in each area.

How We Calculate Pet Hair

Like humans, animals continually shed...but they have a lot more hair than we do. The longer a home goes without cleaning, the more effort it takes to get the majority of hair cleaned up. Because of this the more time that passes, the higher the charge.

Some animals shed more than others and the level of pet hair can adjust your pricing up to 20%.

The Consultation

(click on items to get more information)

What's The Point Of My Consultation?

Your consultation is a necessary part of the process. During the 20 minute session, we can properly determine:

Determining The Proper Service Level

Because people live different lives and have different perspectives, we must come in and visually inspect your home to assess the proper cleaning level.

What people see and what we see are sometimes two different things. Some see this:

And we see this:

Ok, that may be slightly exaggerated but you get our point. If we quote you for a regular cleaning when you really need a deep clean:

  • You'll likely be unhappy with the change in price and possibly the difference in cleaning time
  • Your Hosts came prepared for a sprint when it’s really a marathon, which can affect their morale and performance. We are human.
  • Lovly’s schedule is messed up and we could potentially affect every client’s schedule after you for a day or two, along with not having enough man-power to do the job effectively.

Determine Your Level Of Clutter

With assessing the proper service level, clutter effects:

  • The number of Hosts needed
  • Cleaning times
  • Pricing

For example, a 500ft sq home generally requires 1 Host. However, the same place with major clutter may require 2 Hosts.

Assessing The Amount Of Pet Hair

When people talk about cleaning, they sometimes fail to mention how many pets they have (if they mention it at all). Pet hair adds a lot of time to your cleaning and knowing the level of pet hair helps your Hosts prepare properly.

Determining The Number Of Hosts Needed

The proper number of Hosts is important for many reasons:

  • Host morale: When the level of compensation matches the amount of work, people are happy. When Hosts are happy, they are loyal and work harder, which keeps cost down and you satisfied.
  • Scheduling: Overbooking can lead to a lot of problems. You wouldn’t want to be affected by the person serviced before you. No one likes to be rescheduled and we keep that to a minimum.
  • Cleaning Times: The speed in which Hosts clean your home is directly related to the number of Hosts.

Determining Your Price

Because we have a square foot pricing model, we found that the size people tell us is usually 20% larger than we measure. For example, a client may tell us their home is 1000ft sq and we measure and find that their home is 860ft sq. which is a 140ft sq difference. When all factors have been considered and we have measured your home then we can accurately give you a quote.

Your Cleaning Date

After everything is agreed upon, then we need to schedule your first cleaning. Depending on how early you schedule your consultation, we may even be able to start cleaning the next day.

Getting On The Same Page

Cleaning as a service is not only one thing. Outside of the items already mentioned, the following are also discussed during your consultation to get us on the same page. This ensures that all of the details are understood.

The Lovly Way

"What's included in my cleaning?" Explaining our history is a lot easier than giving some itemized list. After explaining that we specialize in Airbnb/Home-share cleanings, people get it.

We don't charge extra for "green" products, wiping down the fronts of cabinets, baseboards, etc. All this and more is included in your process.

Knowing Your Payment Options

With the history of cleaning services people expect to pay with cash or a check. We take neither. Everything is done online. This avoids the awkward exchange, the possible inconvenience of an ATM run or hunting down your checkbook.

Pay online with a credit, debit or Bitcoin. If you don’t know what Bitcoin is, it’s OK, only 24% of the planet does. You can learn more about Bitcoin under the “Secure Online Payment” section.

Answering All Your Questions

Though we have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section, you may have very specific questions based on past experiences (or lack thereof). Emailing can be a lot of back and forth and a phone call may not do it when we can’t see your home to ask questions of our own.

When all your questions are answered, you can be comfortable moving forward. It’s all a part of the Lovly Experience.

How Do You Define "Clean"?

This may sound strange, nevertheless “clean” means different things to different people. There is the actual definition (which is still vague) and the most important one…yours! Some people are very hard to please when it comes to cleaning, and this may be due to a lack of communication of what “clean” means.

Some people define “clean” as a very particular thing in their situation. If there is a single hair in the bathroom, it’s not clean; if corners have any dirt, the place isn’t clean; if the exposed ducts are dusty, the place is not “clean” and the list goes on. This is all a part of the psychology of cleaning.

By making sure we understand your needs, we have happy clients and receive great reviews. Seeing how reviews can make or break our business, it is very important that we discover these things before we start.

Why Not Just Show Up And Clean Like Everyone Else?

Lovly is a Guest-Hosting Company. Whether hosting guests from afar, throwing parties or simply…coming home, your consultation ensures the end results are the same, a clean environment.  The purpose and goal of our cleaning is not the same as the average or "On Demand" cleaning company. Our clients lose money if their place isn’t clean! We can’t be picky over what and what not to clean. There are a lot of things to balance and the consultation is how we reach equilibrium.

Cleaning Dynamics

What We Do and Don't Clean

Due to our history, we’re used to cleaning everything. We have a very hard time thinking about what (or why) we won’t clean something. We have the training and tools to handle almost any situation. Anything excluded in your regular cleaning generally meets certain criteria.

It's All In The Details

Small details cannot be put in the seemingly popular “A La Carte” what-our-service-includes list. Details will be discussed during your consultation.

Cleaning Service Criteria

(click on items to get more information)

Needs Special Attention and/or Care

Some homes have items that need special attention to clean. Examples of this would be chandeliers, walls, special fabrics on furniture, etc. Attempting to clean these during a standard cleaning would be too time-consuming. This is why a deep cleaning is needed to clean those particular items. Fortunately, these items generally also need infrequent attention.

Needs Special Attention and/or Care

Requires Infrequent Attention

Items that need infrequent attention can fall in a standard or deep clean. The determining factor is if the item or task meets two (2) or more our deep clean criteria. For example:

  • Blinds can be cleaned infrequently in a standard cleaning however, if those blinds are hanging 14 feet in the air, that requires special attention due to their height and the needing of a ladder.
  • Windows are generally cleaned infrequently and don't require special attention because all Host (cleaners) come with strip washers and squeegees. But if the windows are large and tall, they require special attention and should be cleaned during a deep clean.

Necessity cleanings for Airbnb/Home-sharing clients are built into our cleaning system.

Needs Infrequent Attention

Requires Additional Steps

Some items require additional steps to be cleaned: the inside of cabinets, refrigerators, cubby holes in an office or room. These items can take a considerable amount of time to remove, clean and put back everything within them. Some items even need to be taken apart to be cleaned properly.

If there are few or larger items in these areas, it may not be an issue, but for the areas mentioned above, this is not the case 95% of the time.

Requires Additional Steps

Scope Of Services

Many people assume certain tasks are included in a cleaning. A consultation ensures we are on the same page and avoids false expectations which lead to poor reviews and unhappy clients.

There are just some services we don't offer and other tasks may be conditional. Understanding this is imperative to our relationship.

Conditional Matters

  • Bio-Hazards (i.e. Mold): Certain levels of bio-hazards are up to the discretion of each Host.
  • Moving Heavy Furniture: When manpower allows for safe movement.

Out Of Scope

  • Hoarding/Extreme Clutter: You would have to get some Extra Love by DeCluttering first
  • Insects Infestation: We will not risk the spread of an infestation to another client. If discovered, we will stop cleaning immediately and charge accordingly for work done.

Is Outside The Scope Of The Service Requested Or Provided

We use professional tools (i.e. Unger, Dyson, etc), because not all items are created equal. This enables your Hosts to be more efficient and effective when working. For clients with pets, we have hair specific equipment to tackle your pet’s fur. Hosts even carry black lights to ensure cleanliness of those harder to see substances.

Created With Love

Lovly creates it’s own cleaning products to know they are truly safe and to ensure long term exposure has no negative consequences. You, your Hosts, pets, children and family all deserve not to be subjected to the sublethal effect of toxic chemicals. How can we as a company truly say “we care” if our actions don’t follow suit?

Use Your Cleaning Products?

If you’d like us to use particular products, they must have an “A” or “B” (and in some exceptions “C”) grade on the Environmental Working Group’s scale.

(click on items to get more information)

The terms “professional” and “trained” are thrown around a lot in our industry but what do they actually mean? One is technically a “professional” if they get paid to do something. But that doesn’t mean they’re actually good. Also training can be as simple as “take this and dust that”.

We take things a little more seriously. Your Hosts are trained in:

The Lovly WAVE [cleaning] System

The Lovly WAVE is a systematic approach to cleaning any space regardless of size and arrangement. This is how we achieve our thoroughness, unmatched cleaning speed and efficiency. This system is an ongoing process as we continue to find new techniques and methods to clean more in less time. The Lovly WAVE is the cutting edge of cleaning proficiency.

Tools & Techniques

Like the WAVE, the tools we carry and techniques practiced are constantly being pushed to their limits. We’re always trying to do more with each tool and decrease our footprint. Our cleaning pack is already small for what we do and all our tools fit inside one 2075 cubic inch / 34 Liter backpack (vacuum included!). Our tools allow us to handle 99% of situations including high ceiling items (about 15ft), windows, spills, stone floors, etc.

Among the techniques learned and drilled are:

  • Economy of Motion (Speed)
  • Dust Mop Mastery
  • The Mitt Flip
  • Pet/Human Hair Removal
  • Surface Science
  • The Super Secret Technique
  • And More

The Psychology of Cleaning

Cleaning is part art and part science. The psychology of how cleaning affects people is very important. For some of our client's, cleaning is a necessary marketing tool/cost of doing business for their Airbnb/Home-sharing venture. Everyone else must live/work in their homes which affects their mood, mentality and productivity. As Hosts, we must understand how and why homes get messy and dusty. The topics covered in this area are:

  • Why people hesitate to get cleaning services
  • Effects of a clean, unclean and seemingly clean environment
  • How the details make a significant difference in perspective
  • Effects of clutter on people
  • Psychology of Hoarding

Lovly Hosting 101 & 201

Understanding the philosophy of being a great Host is foundational to our role in our client’s Airbnb success as well as understanding how the event of coming home to a clean house plays a significant role in people’s lives. It’s all in the details.

Hosting 101

101 covers working with and around Lovly Home clients. Training goes into how small touches make people happy and improve their psyche unconsciously though they may never notice what's being done.

Hosting 201

201 is an advanced course on Hosting for Lovly Host clients. This includes greeting and interacting with guest. It also covers hospitality and concierge basics.

Modern Appliance Usage

As a Host interacting with many different circumstances, it is crucial knowing how to use modern (and not-so-modern) appliances. Today’s machines are more like computers. While not all machines are super advanced, basic understanding of their proper use must be understood.

For example, dishwashing liquid does not go into a dishwasher. While this may sound simple, it is a common story from many clients we’ve acquired. These issues with their past cleaners have cost them money in repairs.

Safety & Security

Lovly works in an environment that can be hazardous. We interact with bacteria, bodily fluids, possible chemical contamination, etc. This is why making our own cleaning products is so important to what we do.

For the Airbnb/Home-sharing side, we handle people from all over the world and all the possible worldly exposures that come with it. We have a duty of care to protect you, your guests and your Host’s health. For this reason, the following is mandatory to understand and practice:

  • Universal Health Care Practices (UHCP)
  • Dangers and Prevention of Cross Contamination
  • The Importance of Cleaning Order
  • Disinfecting vs. Sanitizing
  • Common [Industry] Germs and Diseases
  • Proper Pet Introduction
  • Approaching A New Dog
  • Animal Triggers
  • Dog Behavior Basics
  • Maintenance Checks
  • Environment Awareness

Lovly's training is always being updated. The more Hosts learn, the better they do their job, the less liability everyone's exposed to. A great side effect of training is happy people who will go the extra mile for you because they know we're taking care of them!

For every foot Lovly cleans, we'll donate 1¢ to fighting and preventing homelessness.
